Khajjiar hills travel guide

Khajjiar is located in the northwestern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is perched at an altitude of 1951 m above sea level. Khajjiar is 22 km from Dalhousie and 24 km from Chamba. Khajjiar, located at an altitude of 1960 m, is often called the Switzerland of India, with its rolling meadows, majestic deodars, bubbly streams, and the sheer opulence of its natural beauty. The snow – line appears above its lush woods, and at the very centre of this divine glade, is a lake fed by countless streams that criss – cross the area.

Khajjiar’s is located between Dalhousie and Chamba,It is a major landmark is a 12th century, golden – domed temple dedicated to Khajjinag, which houses huge, lifesize wooden images of the 5 Pandava brothers. The place is also called the Mini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh. The most important fact about the hill station is that it has an excellent combination of all the three ecological components i.e. lake, forest and the pasture

Khajjiar History
The history of Khajjiar is linked to the rulers of Chamba. The local Rajput rulers ruled Chamba valley in the 6th century ad and made it their capital city. This region became the part of the Mughal Empire in the medieval period and later came under various Sikh kingdoms. Finally, it was taken over by the British. It became a part of the state of Himachal Pradesh when it came into being on April 15, 1948.

Khanjjiar Climate
The climate of Khajjiar is alpine Summers (April-June) are mild and winters (November-February) are cold and bitter. It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September.

Places to see in Khajjiar

Khajji Nag Temple: It is one of the frequently visited temples of Chamba district as it holds great religious importance. The residing deity of Khajji Nag temple is Khajji Naga, the lord of serpent. The temple was built in the 10 th century and you can easily see the artistic blend of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture. Shrines of Lord Shiva and Goddess Hadimba are also placed inside the temple.

Khajjiar Lake is a paradise lake situated amidst the lush grassland of Khajjiar. Khajjiar is a picturesque spot and the lake adds mysticism to the site. A vital part of the superhit movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was shot at this place. Khajjinag, the deity in the Khajji temple has some legendary association with Khajjiar Lake; therefore this lake is considered to be sacred by the locals. The lake is filled with water during all seasons and it doesn’t require rainwater for endurance.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary is spread around Khajjiar and Dalhousie. Kalatop wildlife Sanctuary inhabits deer, leopard, bear, wild cat, many species of birds and some endangered species. Kalatope is situated is the topmost point near Khajjiar and Dalhousie and the sanctuary is spread over a large area. Kalatope Sanctuary is an ideal spot for wildlife photography.

How to reach Khajjiar

By Air: The nearest airports to Khajjiar are Gaggal Airport and Pathankot Airport. Gaggal Airport is situated 97kms near Kangra and Pathankot Airport is located 96kms from Khajjiar. Taxis are available from both these airports to Khajjiar and Chamba.
By Rail: Khajjiar is not connected directly with railway networks and the nearest railway station is situated 92kms away at Pathankot. Regular taxis and buses are available from Pathankot Railway Station to Khajjiar.
By Road: Khajjiar is well connected by motorable roads with major towns of Himachal Pradesh. The distance from Delhi to Khajjiar is 575kms which can be covered in a 15hr drive. Chamba is situated 14kms from Khajjiar. Regular buses and taxis are available from Pathankot to Chamba and Khajjiar.
