Kausani is a mesmerizing hill station located 53 km from Almora in Uttarakhand. There are several spots in the hill station, which offer commanding views of the Himalayan peaks like Trisul, Nanda Devi, Nandakot and Panchchuli. This hill station is one of the most beautiful destinations of Uttarakhand. Located at an altitude of 1890 m, Kausani is located amidst dense pine trees overlooking Someshwar valley on one side and Garur and Baijnath Katyuri valley on the other. The original name of Kausani was Valna and it is also the birth place of Sumitra Nandan Pant, the renowned poet of Hindi literature.

Kausani is also a land of orchards flooded with apples, peaches and pears. The best time to visit Kausani is from April to June and from September to November. Tourists travel to Kausani in great numbers for an exhilarating traveling experience.

Views Of The Snow-Capped Mountains

Anasshakti Ashram

It is a popular landmark of Kausani where Mahatma Ghandhi stayed for a few days. He wrote his commentary of Anashakti Yog at this Ashram. The ashram has a research center and a library. It also houses a Gandhi memorial which reminds the visitors of the teaching of Mahatama Gandhi.

Pant Museum
The birth place of a famous Hindi literature poet, Pant Museum is a great place for literature lovers. Retaining its old-world charm, this place serve as a reference library showcasing the great work of the poet. Researchers from across the country flock to the museum.

Lakshmi Ashram
As has been rightly commented, “a noble life is one dedicated to noble work”, the Lakshmi Ashram is such an organization working for a noble cause. This place is dedicated to social service, the upliftment of women. The surroundings of the ashram are covered by the dense pine forest.

Bageshwar

Regarded as the holy land associated with Lord Sadashiva, the township of Bageshwar is located at the confluence of rivers Saryu, Gomti and the latent Bhagirathi. With the Bhileshwar and Nileshwar mountains on its east and west respectively, Suraj Kund in the north and Agni kund in the west, Bageshwar holds immense spiritual significance. In the heart of the town at the junction of two rivers is the Bagnath temple with a shrine of Bageswar or Vyagreswar, the “Tiger Lord”, another name of Lord Shiva. It is known to have been built by the Kumaon king, Lakshmi Chand in around 1450 A.D. but some Sanskrit inscriptions which can be dated back to a much earlier period are also found here. Devotees throng the temple during the annual festival of Shivratri. Besides the Bageshwar temple the township is dotted with various other temples of significance as well. The Bhairav temple, Dattatrey Maharaj temple, Ganga Mai temple, Hanuman temple, Durga temple, Kalika temple, Thingal Bhairav temple, Panchnam Juna Akhara and the Vaneswar temple are some of the more prominent ones in the area. Katyuri Market, Dug Bazaar, Chowk Bazaar and Mall road are the market areas in and around Bageshwar that one can explore to experience the local flavor.

Pindari Glacier

The Pindari Glacier, in the Bageshwar district, falls in the Kumaon Himalayas.This world famous glacier is a trekkers paradise, as it is easier to visit than most other glaciers. This glacier is situated between the snow capped Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot mountains. The glacier is at an altitute of 3353 mts.

Baijnath Temple
Lying in the Katyuri valley, 19 km away from Kausani and 26 km from Bageshwar, is the ancient town of Baijnath. Once a capital of the Katyuri dynasty of kings who ruled Uttaranchal during 12th and 13th century, Baijnath was once known as Kartikyapura. One of the most important places to visit in Baijnath is the historically and religiously significant Baijnath Temple constructed in the twelfth century.

The temple holds significance because, according to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Parvati were married at the confluence of River Gomati and Garur Ganga. Dedicated to SivaVaidyanatha, the Lord of Physicians, the Baijnath temple is actually a temples’ complex built by the Katyuri kings with the idols of Shiva, Ganesh, Parvati, Chandika, Kuber, Surya and Brahma. Also the town of Baijnath draws its name from the temple. Situated on the left bank of the Gomti River at an elevation of 1126 mts, the temples are constructed in stone. The main temple that houses a beautiful idol of Parvati is chiseled in black stone. The temple is approached from the riverside by a flight of steps made of stones constructed by the orders of a Katyuri queen. On the way to the main temple, just below the house of the Mahanta, is the temple of Bamani. Legend goes that the temple was built by a Brahmin woman and dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Trekking in Kausani
Kausani offers tremendous opportunities for trekking. The hill station also serve as the base for treks such as Adi Kailash trek, Base Kasauni trek and the Bageshwar Sunderdhanga trek.

There are numerous beautiful places around Kausani, which are also famous for their immense natural beauty and serenity such as Baijnath, Bageshwar, Chaukori, Berinag, Gangolhat, Patal Bhuvaneshwar and Gwaldam.

Or one can approach local Eateries/dhabas which offer mainly vegetarian food.

Kausani Shopping
In the small town of Kausani ,you will not find any good shopping centres and big shops. The market place is small and it meets needs of local people.

By Air – The closest airport is Pantnagar which is 180 kms away.

By Rail – The closest railway station is Kathgodam. This is 142 kms away.

By Road – Kaushani is connected by road from Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Nainital, Pantnagar, Ranikhet, Gopeshwar etc.
