Alleppey travel guide – Alleppey sightseeing

Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, Alleppey’s proximity to Cochin makes it an easy-to-reach destination. It is around 60 kms from Cochin in the south. If you are in Trivandrum, it will take you around 4 hours to reach here from road or rail. Its nearest airport is in Cochin. It is well-connected with rail with Cochin and Trivandrum and many other Indian cities and towns. It is also well-connected to NH – 47, and also not very surprisingly by water!

The town was founded by Raja Keshawadasan, Divan of Travanacore in 1762. With the arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty. Referred to as the venice of the east by travelers from across the world, this backwater country is also home to diverse animal and bird life. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala.

Tourist Places to visit :

Kuttanad

It’s called the rice bowl of kerala because of her wealth of paddy crops, is at the very heart of the backwaters. The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of Banana, Cassava and Yam. This is perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 mtr below sea level. Inland waterways which flow above land lever are an amazing feature of this region.

Alleppey Beach

This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alappuzha (Alleppey). The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the vijaya beach park add to the attractions of the beach. There is also an old lighthouse which is greatly fascinating to visitors.

Kerala Pathira Manal – According the mythology a Young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad lake to persorm his evening ablutions and the water made way for land to rise from below, thus creating the enchanting Island pf Pathiramanal (sands of midnight). This little island on the backwaters is a favourite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world. This island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom, and is accessible only by boat.

Punnamada Kayal :

This place hosts the annual boat festival, known as the Nehru Trophy. A number of people gather to see the event in the month of August-September. The boats are built to look like snakes, and can accommodate 120 contestants each, who give their best to get the prestigious award.

Champakulam Church

One of the oldest churches in kerala, the St. Mary’s Church is believed to be one of the seven established by St. Thomas. The annual feast at this church falls on the 3rd sunday of october every year.

Krishnapuram Palace : It is 47 km away from Alappuzha, and was built in the 18th century.

The palace has amazing Kerala architecture with narrow corridors, gabled roof and dormer windows ‘Gajendra Moksham’, the largest mural in Kerala is placed in the west end of the palace. It also has a museum having a collection paintings, sculptures, etc.

Sea View Park : The park offers boating facilities and a swimming pool. Boat rentals for 10 minutes: Roundboat (4 seater): Rs. 10 Pedalboat (2 seater): Rs. 15 Pedalboat (4 seater): Rs. 25. Video permit Rs. 15, Camera permit Rs. 100 respectively.

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple

(15 km south of alapuzha) Built in the typical Kerala architectural style, this temple is famous all over india for the Palpayasam, the daily offering of deliciously sweet milk porridge. It is also in this temple that pallipana is performed by velans (sorcerers) once every twelve years.

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple – Situated near Harippad, this is a serpent shrine under the patronage of a brahman family, headed by a priestess.

The ancient shrine is an internationally renowned pilgrim centre dedicated to the Serpent God Nagaraja.

Karumadikkuttan Village : 12 kilometers far from the Alleppey, this village is held in high esteem for the magnificent black figure of the great Buddha which dates back to 10th century.

Best time to Visit : This town usually has temperate and humid weather but it is more pleasant in winters. The months of August-September and February-march are ideal to visit this place. The temperature in winter ranges from 20 to 32 degrees and in summers it ranges from 22 to 35 degrees.

How to Reach Alleppey
» By Air :The nearest domestic airport at Kochi. The Trivandrum International Airport is a 3 hour drive from Kochi.
» By Rail : Alleppey is well connected by train and even has a small railhead of its own.
» By Road : Alleppey is well connected to all the cities of South India. Regular bus services operate from Alleppey to other important towns.
