Best Beaches of Kerala
One of the most overlooked beaches in India are the ones found in the state of Kerala. Many people overlook these beaches because of the backwater tributaries located along its 900 kilometers of coastline, but do not let that fool you. The entire region is covered with white sandy beaches as a number of beautiful outcroppings of rocks dotted along its shore line.
Malabar Coast
Along the Malabar Coast, you can find the small village of Kovalam which is home to Kovalam Beach. Although considered to be one continuous beach, the shoreline along this sleepy village can be separated into three unique beaches of which the most popular is Lighthouse Beach.
Kovalam Beach
Kovalam beach, was discovered by the western hippies in the 1960s. It was they who chanced upon this hidden paradise, till then a fishing village (as it still is on Chowara Beach). It has since become one of the most popular beach destinations. Kovalam has today acquired all the trappings of a beach resort . Marari Beach
Marari Beach which features an awe inspiring coastline backed with prestigious palm trees also offers some culture that has remained virtually unchanged for the last century. You are almost guaranteed to see local fisherman from the village bringing in a fresh catch throughout the day which also means that this is a great location to try out some of the local seafood delicacies.
If you are a lover of birds, then perhaps the beach for you can be found around the village of Kumarakom which is actually composed of a number of islands situated on a placid lake. The area also features a 14 acre bird sanctuary which one can see migratory birds from all over Asia.
Alappuzha Beach
One of the more popular beaches in Kerala is the Alappuzha Beach which features a 140 year old pier that sticks out into the water. Not only are the beaches great, but thanks to the pier you may also be able to take up a little bit of local fishing. To top it all off, there are a number of lagoons featuring lush green scenery located throughout the nearby countryside.
An important part of Kerala’s maritime industry can be found in Beypore which also boasts it own beautiful beach. The area sports a number of harbors and ports as well as an important part of India’s ship building industry.
Fort Kochi Beach
If you are looking for some true historically important beaches, then you should try Fort Kochi Beach whose main feature is the historic colonial fort situated along its shoreline. There are a number of great spots along the beach where you can get away and relax. The city itself also offers historical importance which can be seen by simply taking a strolling walk down any number of its colonial streets.
