Coonoor Sightseeing

Coonoor located in Tamil Nadu is one of the most visited hill station in South India. It is actually situated in the Nilgiri hills. The impressive views of the lush green hills are some of the greatest reasons for which people visit this place. Apart from that, this place is also known well for the tea plantations, because the environment here is very favorable for growing aromatic tea. There are large numbers of places to visit here.

St. George’s Church:
This is one of the best examples of the typical cantonment church, and is made of white dressings and yellow ochre stucco. There are small vestibules with niches in this church. The interior of this church is also very beautifully decorated, and the entire church is built in a gothic style which makes it amazing, as a whole.

Lady Canning’s Seat:
This is located at about 9 km from Coonoor and is designed in the Victorian style. It is a mansion that overlooks the tea estates, the Rock and the Droog of the Lamb’s and also the Lampton’s Peak.

Sim’s Park:

This is also a famous landmark in Coonoor. It is basically a botanical garden, which is spread over 12 hectares, and there are about 1, 000 species of plants here with wide varieties of ferns, camellia, and even pines.

The Pasteur Institute:
This is also a very popular tourist attraction in Coonoor, and is located close to the Sim’s Park. This institute basically specialises in different kinds of vaccines for polio and rabies. However, this institute is open only on Saturday for the visitors.

Pomological Station:
This is basically a research center with research in pomegranates and apricots. In fact, it is considered to be one of the three experimental gardens for fruits in the midst of the Nilgiri Hills.

Droog
Located 13-km away from Coonoor, Droog takes you back in time with its rustic ambience. Main attraction here is the ruins of a fort that was once used in the 16th century by Tipu Sultan, the legendary ruler of Mysore.

Dolphin’s Nose Viewpoint

The Dolphin’s Nose Viewpoint is 10 km from Coonoor . It not only provides a panoramic view of the vast expanse of the Nilgiri Hills but also of Catherine Falls.

Fun City
Located on the grand Coonoor Road, 3 km from the town. This amusement park is ideal picnic spot for family and time-outs. With numerous rides, fast food outlets, and an ambience that nurtures a festive mood, Fun City is fast growing as a major tourist attraction in Coonoor.

Lamb’s Rock:

It is yet another vantage point from where tourists can get a fantastic view of the entire surroundings, including the tea and coffee plantations.

Other tourist places in Coonoor are, Elk Falls, Wellington, Bikkapathi Reserve, Koala View Point, St. Catherine Waterfalls, Law’s Falls and Ketti.

The best time to visit Coonoor is April to June & September to November.

  • I have been to Ooty and Coonoor too, they are lush and green! However, my two cents is that this building looks out of place in that srinourdungs. I prefer natural material and subdued structures when they are being built in such natural environments!
