Crawford market is located in the south of the Mumbai city and is popular among all the markets found in Mumbai. The market got its name from the name of Sir Arthur Crawford who was the 1st municipal commissioner of this particular city.

Later on, the market came to be known as the Mahatma Jotirao Phule after doing the struggle by President Mukundraoli Bhujibal Patil, who was the president of Mahatma Phule Smarak Samiti. The market is located to the opposite of the Mumbai police station headquarters which is to the north of the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station and to the west of J.J. Flyover. This is a market of wholesale fruits, vegetables and poultry.

At one of the endings of this market, there is a big pet store and various breeds of dogs are available here. Apart from dogs you can found cat, birds and other pet animals here. It also deals in endangered animals which is an illegal business. Imported items are generally sold in the market like imported foods, cosmetics, gift and household items. This was the only wholesale fruit market in Mumbai until 1996, when the traders of wholesale articles need to relocate to the new Bombay area or the Navi Mumbai.
