Igatpuri hill station

Igatpuri is a beautiful hill station situated in Nashik district in Maharashtra, in the lap of Sahyadris at a height of 1900 feet in Western Ghats. About 140 Kms from Mumbai and 45 km from Nasik on busy Mumbai-Agra NH-3, Igatpuri is a small town, offering spectacular views of natural beauty. Those looking for some Devin peace in nature’s lap must visit here at least ones in a life time. Igatpuri has a pebbly terrain accompanied with thick forests.

Igatpuri is a small hill station but it has all the ingredients of a convincing weekend getaway. After the monsoon season, Igatpuri covers itself in all shades of green and the streams and waterfalls start to burst out with water. There is nothing much adventures to do here but you can always walk down the uncharted lanes, feel the lush green grass, get soaked in the waterfalls which is worth its price in gold or lets say ‘Priceless’. This hill station is full of natural wonders which you can explore leisurely.

For Buddhists, Igatpuri is a heaven, as it is well known for its Buddhist Pagoda for Meditation called Vipassana and wada pavs. The International Centre for Vipassana meditation called Dhammagiri that is supposed to be the largest Vipassana Center is situated in this gorgeous hill station.

Prime Attractions of Igatpuri
Tringalwadi Fort :

is a massive mountain fort located in Shayadri Ranges of Igatpuri. The fort is at a height of 3000 ft and has a turban like head. Adjacent to Tringalwadi Fort is the Tringalwadi Lake, rich in avian population. The fort itself is architecturally admirable and gives panoramic glimpses of Kulan and Kalsubai mountains in Maharashtra. One must walk for 3-4 km to reach the fort during cultivation seasons of monsoon. A temple of Lord Hanuman is located near the fort.

Tringalwadi Lake :

The most impressive of all lakes in Igatpuri is Tringalwadi Lake. The small lake offers views of Tringalwadi fort and Kulang and Kalsubai Mountains. The waters of this lake are surrounded by greenery and tourists spend pleasant evenings here. A nearby attraction is Tringalwadi Fort located at a height of 300 ft. The lake is a source of water for the rich cultivable lands in Tringalwadi. One can reach here from Igatpuri Railway Station by taking a road towards Mumbai.

Five waterfalls

is reached through the rough road leading to the railway line. After crossing it and then climbing down, it offers a breath taking sight of five waterfalls. The path to this place is difficult so one has to tread carefully. The best time to visit these waterfalls is during monsoon.

Vaitarna Dam : Located at a distance of 17 km from Igatpuri, the Vaitarna Dam was built in 1950s on Vaitarna River amidst Western Ghats and thick forests. The dam water forms a lagoon and is a picturesque tourist attraction. The dam supplies water and also generates electricity for Mumbai. Due to increasing water scarcity, a new dam is proposed to be built here in 2011. It will soar 102 m high and will store 455 million liters of water.

The Ghatandevi Temple : is also an interesting place to visit. The temple is dedicated to the deity Ghatan Devi, believed to be the protector of ghats by the locals. The temple and its surrounding deliver a sight that is worth savouring. One can get an engaging view of peaks like Harihar, Trimak and Durvar. One gets introduced to a divine ambience of serenity and calmness personified.

Amruteshwar Temple :

This temple was built 1200 years ago in Hemadpanti style and is famous for its intricate carvings. The road leading towards the temple itself is stunning with lush green fields and Mount Kalsubai in the backdrop. One can also reach the temple by crossing the Arthur lake by boat.

The Bhatsa and Chorna Rivers flow in Shahapurtal in Thane district. The dam built over Bhatsa River is referred to as Bhatsa Dam and the accumulated water gives rise to a lake. The 89 ft. high dam occupies an area of 3070 ha. This dam serves the purpose of irrigation, water supply and generates a power of 15 mW through hydro electricity. Bhatsa Dam is a major water supplier in Thane district of Maharashtra.

Camel Valley :

A little away from Bhatsa river valley towards the right is the Camel valley. Monsoons are the best time to explore this area as the valley has a spectacular waterfall of about 1000 feet in height formed by rain water that falls like a sheet of white paper into the base of the valley.

Igatpuri Accommodations
This town is just a dot of civilization and you might not find any Hi-Fi accommodations here, but there are few that are well maintained and will provide you with all the basic requirements. For other luxurious, count on the beautiful nature itself.

How to reach Igatpuri
In order to reach Igatpuri you will either have to take a long distance train or take a bus on reaching Kasara. You can avail trains and buses from Mumbai to go to Kasara. Either take Tapovan Express to Igatpuri or any local train to Kasara from CST. Then take a bus or a taxi from Kasara that will take you to Igatpuri. It takes about 2.5 hrs in train and about 30-40 minutes by road from Kasara to Igatpuri.
