Khajuraho Travel Guide – Khajuraho Travel Attractions

Khajuraho is an Indian village in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of India. The wonder village has number of monuments that have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. The highlight of these temples is the titillating erotic sculptures of captivating beauty. Khajuraho has hot summers and cold winters temperatures range from 4 °C to 47 °C.

The best time to tour Khajuraho is from October to March. One can enjoy the ‘Khajuraho Dance Festival’ during the month of March. The three main geographical divisions of the temples in Khajuraho, such as the Eastern, the Western, and the Southern groups are briefed in the following paragraphs.

The Eastern Group
The eastern group consists of three Hindu temples and three Jain temples. The three Jain temples are Parsavanath Temple, Ghantai Temple, and Adinath Temple.

The sculptures of this temple are one-of-a-kind that displays day-to-day activities in a picturesque manner. Especially the sculptures on the wall of the north side of the temple are awesome. The Ghantai temple has a marvelous frieze portraying the sixteen dreams of Mahavir’s mother, and a Jain goddess with a variety of arms posing on the Garuda. Adinatha temple is one other exemplary architectural display of the contemporary skills of the period, with sculptures of extreme beauty.

Among the three Hindu temples one is dedicated to Brahma the one with four faces. The second temple is that of Vamana, which has enticing images of the Hindu goddesses. The third temple is that of Javari, and it has a beautiful ornamental gateway that casts a spell on every visitor. These provocatively sensuous images would excite any onlooker.
The Western Group

The western group of temples also the best of Khajuraho consists of Kandariya Mahadeva, Chaunsat Yogini, Chitragupta Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Lakshamana Temple, and Matangeshwara Temple. Kandariya Mahadeva dedicated to Shiva is the largest of the group and has about 900 statues. Chaunsat Yogini is said to be the oldest temple of this group. Dedicated to goddess Kali, this temple is built of granite and unfortunately no image of the goddess has survived. Chitragupta Temple is one which is dedicated to the sun god. The Vishwanath Temple enshrines a three-headed image of Brahma. The exteriors of this temple are extravagantly carved, and a massive six feet high Nandhi bull faces the sanctum of the temple. In the Lakshamana Temple the sanctum is decked with a three-headed statue of Vishnu’s incarnations that includes Narasimha and Varaha. Matangeshwara Temple that is dedicated to Shiva has an eight feet high lingam. It also has an archeological museum with a fantastic collection of sculptures of the ancient times.

The Southern Group

The southern group of temples is situated about five kilometers from the village of Khajuraho. This group consists of Duladeo and the Chaturbhuj Temples. Both these temples depict the erotic images of the goddess of Hinduism. The Duladeo temple is dedicated to Shiva, whereas the Chaturbhuj temple is devoted to Vishnu.

Other places worth seeing around the village of Khajuraho are Benisagar Lake, Ranguan Lake, Pandav Waterfall, Ranch Waterfalls, Rajgarh Palace, Panna, Panna National Park, and many more.

Accommodation and Transportation

Khajuraho being one of the important pilgrimage centers of the Hindus and also a World Heritage Site is air-linked with Delhi, Agra, and Varanasi. Although Harpalpur is the nearest railway station, Jhansi and Santa railway stations are preferred for their convenience. However, Khajuraho is well connected by the road ways to cities like Panna, Satna, Chattarpur, Jabalpur, Mahoba, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Indore.
