On the similar lines, the city of Mysore can also be identified and distinguished at the same time. It is a unique city which has multiple dishes derived from its name; Mysore Pak and Mysore Dosa to name a few. These delicacies are relished by folks of different communities.

Trivia

As per the Indian folk tales, the city of Mysore is named after the demon Mahishasur. He ruled the kingdom thousands of years ago and unleashed his brutality on common people. He was later on killed by the Goddess Chamundeshwari to get people rid of his atrocities. This is the reason, the hills around which the city is based is known as Chamundi hills.

Demography

Mysore is the third largest city in Karnataka, which is located at a distance of 146 km from the capital of Karnataka, Bengaluru. It boasts of around 13 lakh people living here peacefully. As per the 2011 census, the city of Mysore was the largest non-metropolitan city with world class infrastructure and facilities.

Tourist Spots

Tourism is one aspect where Mysore has a clear upper hand. With its rich culture and heritage that date from ancient era make the city a phenomenal place for people to pay a visit here from across the globe.

Somnathpur Temple: The temple which is also referred to as Chennakesava was built by Hoysala king Narasimha III. It falls under the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) which takes care of its magnificent sculptures, carvings and architect.

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens: The best part about this zoo is it is one of the oldest zoos in the country which was established in the year 1892 by the then ruler Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar. One can see wide varieties of national and international birds, animals and creatures and can learn some unknown facts about them. Altogether, it’s a decent destination for a family outing in Mysore.

Amba Vilas: It’s popularly known as Mysore king’s palace. It has a collection of artefacts, paintings and other valuable and precious things from all over the world.  One can glance upon the inspiration in the architecture of the palace borrowed from several states and reigns.

Namdroling Monastery: This is one place which holds a special place in the hearts of Buddhism followers. It houses more than five thousand Buddhist monks. It comes under the purview of Mysore city. One feels at peace and blessed visiting this monastery.

Best time to visit

One can visit Mysore at any time of the year. However, the best time to visit Mysore remains the Navratri purely for the Vijaydashmi or Dussehra. It’s a 10-day festival which is celebrated with all zeal and élan.  It’s great to be in the city during that time of the year when everything is decorated and illuminated.
