Nainital City Guide – Nainital Travel Attractions

Nainital is a beautiful town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is situated in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas at an altitude of 6,350 ft above sea level.
With numerous lakes, the district of Nainital has earned the name ‘Lake District of India’. Nainital is literally a glittering jewel in the Himalayan necklace. A pleasant weather prevails in the town throughout the year. The temperature dips down to ?3 °C during the winters, and the town has a maximum of 27 °C during the summers. There will be snow fall in the town during the winter season. An introduction to some of the interesting places in Nainital is given in the following sections.

Naini Lake

Naini Lake also known as Naini Taal is a picturesque blue green lake is located in Nainital. The very town of Nainital acquired its name from this beautiful lake. The lake is in the shape of an eye, hence the name Naini. The name Naini stands for the eyes of the goddess sati, the divine consort of the Hindu god Shiva. The lake looks more beautiful during the nights because of the reflection of the lights from the town. It is the best place for yachting and boating.

Hanuman Garhi

Hanuman Garhi is at a walkable distance form the town of Nainital. It is a religious centre established by Baba Neem Kiroli. The location is famous for its sun set view. There is a temple for Hanuman at the top of the hill. One can also reach the temple by taxi or bus. The famous Shitala Devi temple and Ashram of Lila Sah Bapu are on the other side of the hill.

Naina Peak

The Naina peak is also known as the China peak. It is the tallest peak in Nainital. A view of the town from this peak will be a fascinating experience. The best way to reach the peak is to take ponies that are readily available for a rent. One can also walk up. As there are no hotels are restaurants, food and water should be taken along with.

The Flatts

The Flatts is a place on the north side of the lake. During the evenings, one can see the place heavily crowded. It also has a playing ground in which sports, games, and cultural events are conducted during the festival seasons. There is Bhotia Market in the location, where vendors sell fancy items. It also has a Mosque, a Gurudwarea, and the famous Naina Devi temple. In the periphery it has car parking area and a boat house club.

Nainital Zoo

The Nainital Zoo is small yet beautiful. Animals such as deer, bears, tigers, and many other species are well maintained in the zoo. It will be a great entertainment for children as well as adults. One can either walk up or take a pony to reach the spot.

Other places worth seeing in and around Nainital are as follows: The Aerial Ropeway, St. John’s Church, Bhim Taal, Kilburi, Bhowali, Ghorakhal, Sattal, Bhimtal, Naukuchiyatal, Kainchi Dham, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet, Kausani, and many more.

Transport and Stay

The nearest airport is 70 km away from Nainital in Pantnagar. The airports in Delhi and Lucknow are also easily accessible. The nearest railway station is the one in Kathgodam. It is about 35 km away from Nainital. There are regular trains from Delhi, Dehradun, Lucknow, Howarah, and many other cities around. The national highway No. 87 passes through Nainital making it easy to access the town from Delhi, Agra, Dehradun, Haridwar, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Bareilly. Special luxury coaches are available from Delhi to Nainital. Although buses are available, taxies and ponies are the most enjoyable means of local transport. The aerial ropeway is an exciting way of reaching snow view point from Nainital.
