Pamban Bridge is located on the strait known as Palk Strait that joins Pamban Island and Rameshwaram Island to the main India. This cantilever bridge works both as the road and railway bridge but mainly it is meant for the railway usage. Pamban Bridge was the first bridge that was built over the sea and it is also the second longest. The length of the bridge is 2.3 km and in the year 1914 it was opened for the use of traffic. This bridge also allows ships to pass below it and is still in function today.

Meter gauge trains used to go on this bridge. With the upgradation made by the Indian Railways it becomes capable to carry broad gauge trains now. The two leaves on the either side of the bridge is manually operated by workers so that it can be used as a gateway for several water activities like passing of fishing vessels, oil tankers, cargo carriers, coast guard ships etc. The parallel rail bridge and the islands that are adjoining to the Pamban Bridge can be viewed clearly from here. The view of the bridge is just fabulous and one cannot forget the view ever in his life.
