Peermade Hill Station

Peermade, situated 915 mts above sea level 85 kilometers from Kottayam, is a common name to those who stays in South India. Even people who might have ventured to the famous the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary might be able to recollect Peermade as this beautiful hill station falls on the way to Periyar. It was the summer retreat of the Travancore Royal family.

What meets the eye here is acres and acres of spice plantation, coffee plantation and tea gardens. On both side of the pathway there are rows and rows of Eucalyptus trees. Further up there are pine trees clustered .The whole picture is one of peace, contentment , and yes very wild. Nature has its own voice here. The name Peermade is reminiscent of the Sufi saint Peer Mohammed-the hill of the Peer. Waterfalls are quite a common site here. Small streams, here and there enliven the whole scenery. It is not at a very high altitude but still the weather is quite cool.

Historical View : The Palace which is the summer residence of the rulers of Tranvancore is the place of historical importance among the tourist. The mausoleum of the Sufi saint Peer Mohammed may be visited on the Peeru Hills.

Green forest: Peermade is surrounded by gorgeous greens of the plantations of Coffee, tea, coconut, pepper, cardamom, rubber and eucalyptus. The gorgeous green grasslands and the pine forests add to the rich flora of Peermade.

Waterfalls : Waterfall at peermade is another major tourist attraction. Meloram, Nallathanni, Panchalimedu and Valanjamkanam are amongst the waterfalls worth visiting at Peermade.

Tea estates :

One can visit Tea estates and factories in and around Peermade. In Pattumala the famous tea factories plantations are Located. The Velamkanni Matha Church and the flower garden are the other must visits at Pattumala.

Sahyadri Ayurvedic Centre : In Peermade Sahyadri Ayurvedic Centre which offers curative and rejuvenating treatment packages. the visit to the raw drugs museum with the collection of 200 varieties of rare and endangered herbs is worth.

Adventure in Peermade : For adventure loving people there are many trekking trails that add to the pristine beauty of Peermade. Peeru Hills, Kalthotti, Vagamon along with Karandakapara Hills, Grampi or Parunthupara, Memala offer excellent trekking routess. Cycling and horse riding are the other activities popular at Peermade. Kuttikanam is the other town close to Peermade where one have terrific trekking opportunities.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary : In close vicinity to Peermade, 43 km away, is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The wildlife reserve is renowned for its tigers, elephants, sambar, flying squirrels and laughing thrushes. In fact in the grasslands of the Peermade itself you may spot the tiger and the leopard besides the Bison, wild bear, languor and monkeys.

If you are looking for some spectacular sights of the beautiful nature, hills of Grampi or Parunthupara at peermade is also worth visiting.

Nedumbasherry airport is the nearest airport to Peermade (160 Kms). Then from there you can reach Peermade by a taxi or a local bus via Kottayam (about 80 Km), Mundakayam (About 60 Km), Peermade (20 Km).
