Places to visit in and around Mangalore

Mangalore is very famous city of Karnataka and has some interesting tourist places to visit, Mangalore is situated 350 km away from its capital city Bangalore. The name of this city came from Hindu Goddess Mangaladevi. This city has the Western Ghats in west side and the other side has the Arabian Sea, this is India’s leading port city because of these characteristics of this city.

Mangalore city has been ruled by leading nations at different ages of time. It has a very famous cricket stadium named Mangala. It has new Mangalore Port which is the ninth largest port in India. In Mangalore you will find many festivals and rituals which are worth watching scenes. Every year a race of buffaloes is organized here which is called Kambala, apart from this Kodial theru is a very popular and unique festival of Mangalore. And while you are in Mangalore do not forget to get a taste of the local Mangalore cuisine, rich with sea–food and coconut. Here is the list which should be seen by every visitor of Mangalore:

Major tourist places in Mangalore

St. Aloysius Church

This church was built in 1900 and it is located on lighthouse hill which is 1 km away from Nehru Maidan Bus stand. The walls of this Church cover the paintings of very famous artists Antony Moshaini of Italy. This is a worth visiting Church because of its beauty and charm.

Kadri Manjunatha Temple
It is an ancient historic spot which is situated 4 km away from Nehru Maidan Bus stand. It is also famous because it is one of the oldest temples of the South Indian temples and it contains seven sacred ponds, Jogi Mutt, caves of Pandavas etc., Which are the main attractions for the pilgrims. Apart from it, this temple is famous for its best bronze statue in India.

Kudremukh

Located 59 km from Mangalore, It is a mountain range in Chikkamagaluru district, this area is totally covered by dense forests. You can feel and see the wildlife of this place which is very attractive to anyone. This is the origin of three famous rivers named the Bhadra, the Tunga and the Nethravathi. You will find here grassy slopes, lush green forests, rare orchids etc.; This is the best place for picnic and trekking. In Kudremukh you will find many other attractions like Jamalabad Fort, Hanumana Gundi waterfalls, Kudremukh national park etc.

Sringeri

It is one of the best and most important pilgrim centers of Karnataka. This Sringeri Mutt was founded in the ninth century by Saint Sri Adi Shankara. It is located on the banks of river Tungabhadra and amidst the lush hills of Chikmagalur. Apart from this, it also has old Jain Monastery.

Venur

It is a pilgrimage center which is famous for its well known 11 meter high statue of Lord Bahubali. It is situated on the southern banks of Gurupur River and it is 50 km away northeast of Mangalore. It contains eight Bastis and a Lord Mahadeva temple. It is a good place for pilgrims and the person who are interested to see various incarnations of God.

Sultan Battery

It is located in Boloor which is 6 km away from Mangalore city bus stand. It was built by Tippu Sultan to prevent warships to enter the Gurpur River; it was totally made of black stones. The other part of this fort is called as Tippu’s well. It is very famous desert spot because of its impression of a miniature fortress and arrangements for mounting cannons.

Dharmasthala

Dharmasthala is a temple village located 79 km from Mangalore city on the banks of Nethravathi River; it is the pilgrim center which is the perfect example of communal harmony. In Dharmasthala you will find many other attractions like Manjunatha temple, Gomateshwara statue which is 16 meter high. Manjunatha temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and housed a lounge of gold.

Mangalore Beach
Mangalore beach also known as Tannirbavi beach and a ideal place to enjoy sun set. Mangalore Beach is a place where River Netravathi and Gurupura join together and forms the beautiful backwater.

Light House Hill Garden

Situated just 1 km away from Mangalore bus stand in the heart of city, garden offer an amazing view of natural beauty, sun setting and sailing ships. This is historic spot was believed to be built by Haider Ali in 18th century. It is a favorite hangout of the tourists specially among the youngsters.

Mangaladevi Temple

Mangalore city derives its name from the presiding Deity Mangaladevi, the Goddess of fortune. The 10th century temple is situated 3 Km. away from main City Bus stand. The temple is surrounded by many forts, this temple built by the Ballal family of Attavar in memory of a Malabar Princess – a princess of Kerala, is a tile roofed low structure.

By Air
Mangalore airport is around 10 km from city center and well connected to Bangalore and Chennai.

By Train
Mangalore has a major railway junction in South India.

By Road
Mangalore is very well connected to all major cities of Karnataka by numerous state transport and private transport buses.
