Places to visit in Coorg

In simple words Coorg is the heaven on the earth. You will find many historical places, wonderful temples, exciting water rafting. You can take an adventurous tour of wildlife here. If you been born to live daring life then don’t loose this opportunity.

Coorg state in Karnataka was captured by British after Coorg war. Coorg became a diocese of British India in 1834. India is a land of diversity. You will find a variety or diversity at different places, still here unity is found. Coorg is one of the seductive places of India. Coorg is also called as Scotland of India. This is a very famous and attractive hill-station found in south western part of Karnataka. The place is very much efficient regarding tourism point of view. To have a look at the beauty of nature visit Coorg. You can earn lots of sweet memories while doing a tour of Coorg. Coorg is a place where you will find many places to wander. Bhagamandala, Madikeri, Virajpet, Talakaveri, Kushalnagar these are some popular places in Coorg.

Places to visit in and near Coorg

Madikeri
Madikeri is the capital of Coorg. This is the best place to spend time. It is at very small distance from Mysore. Well if you are in Madikeri, you can visit Coorg within 4-5 days.

Omkareshwar Temple

This small and holy temple of Lord Shiva is located in the heart of Madikeri. The architecture of the temple is quite attractive and the tank which is in the front of the temple raises its beauty.

Raja’s Tomb
It is situated in Madikeri on a hill which has the tombs of a king and his family. If you like monuments then you must come here.

Raja’s seat
This is one of the most important place of Madikeri, that’s the place where the kings used to saty in the evening and they spent their most of the leisure time at this place.

Abbi Falls

This is an attractive waterfall located near the Medikeri. This waterfall shows the real beauty of the city.

Nehru Mantap
Situated in the vicinity of Raja’s seat it is normally unnoticed by majority of tourists. This place is an ideal escape from the crowd and to spend some lonely time.

Dubare Forest

This is a training center situated on the bank of the Kaveri river. This is a place where elephants are captured, you will love to see all the elephants getting trained. An elephant Training Camp run by the Forest Department on the banks of river Kaveri.

Bylakuppe Golden Temple

The temple houses a big idol of Lord Budha. Most of the visitors must visit this tremendous place. Now a day all the visitors gathered here to see this very famous spot of the city.

Nisargadhama Forest
This is the place where you can watch different kind of birds, deers, rabbits and peacocks.

Tala Cauvery

This is the originating place of the Kaveri river. Also there is a very small Famous Bhangandeshwara temple attracts thousands of religious people.

Nalknad Palace
It is located near a village named Yavakapadi and was built between the years 1792 and 1794 A.D. This simple palace is famous for its paintings and carvings. Now this palace belongs to Archaeology department.

Iruppu Falls
This is the other most beautiful waterfalls of the city. Concrete steps and slippery rock, you have to climb there to approach the waterfall.

Mercara Palace and fort
The Mercara palace located in Madikeri built in the year 1814 by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II, Madikeri Fort: Positioned in the heart of Mercara, this 19th century fort houses a temple, a chapel, a prison and a small museum.

The place is very famous regarding wildlife. Coorg consist three wildlife sanctuaries namely:

• Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
• Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
• Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary

Dargah Sharif
The Holy Tomb, of Yemmemadu is one of the most sacred shrines for Muslims in Kodagu district. It is the ‘Dargah’ or the tomb of Hazrath Sufi Shaeed and Sayyed Hassan Sakaf Halramir who came from Persia and devoted their life to the service and upliftment of the poor and downtrodden.

Bylakuppe Tibetan Colony and Temple
Bylakuppe is a small town situated 6 kms from Kushalnagar or 42 Kms from Mercara. Around 17000 refugees and nearly 6000 monks and nuns. the place has several monasteries and the famous among them are the Great Gompa of Sera Je, Sera Mey and the Namdroling monastery.

Padi Igguthappa Temple
Padi Iggutappa Temple is situated in Igguthappadevara betta located in Aiyengeri forest near Kakkabe, resembling most of the ancient Keralite temples, in style. It is the supreme diety of worship for the Puthari festival.

Gaddige
Gaddige, built in the 18th century is the tombs of King Virarajendra, Lingarajendra and one of their court priests, rest in the northern corner of the town.

The perfect time to visit Coorg is in between November and April as most of the times at Coorg climate is not clear. The place encloses all the beauties of nature that rarely a place have. Come over here and you’ll find yourself. God gave us a golden opportunity to be on earth. Some of us understand the thing but some don’t. Hell and Heaven are on earth, just we need to recognize it. How to reach Coorg
By Road : Coorg is accessed by road, Government and Private buses are available frequently. Distances to coorg from major cities: Bangalore to coorg – 250km (KSRTC government buses available frequently on this route with all ranges of fare), Mangalore to Coorg- 120km, Mysore to Coorg – 120km, Hassan to coorg – 140km.

By Air : Coorg does not have Airport and Railway Transport. Nearest airport is in Mysore and Mangalore. Bangalore International Airport and Kozikkode International Airport is secondary option apart from nearest airport to Coorg.

By Rail : Puttur is the nearest rail station to coorg (train travels through Mangalore to Bangalore), It is just 1 Km away from puttur town.
