Places to visit in Shimla : Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh which carries the colonial rule legacy of the British in the Indian subcontinent. Shimla is one of the most ideal and popular tourists’ destinations of people from all over India and abroad. The pleasant climate complimented with the scenic beauty, Shimla is surrounded with ice headed mountains and lush green hills. The unlimited expansion of the town at the time of the colonial era is appreciable even today as the combination of the picturesque location with a profound historical importance is completely unique a feature. Amongst the many places to visit a few are mentioned as follows:

The Mall

the most commercially active places of Shimla, the mall indeed is a heaven for shoppers. The place comprises of several shops, offices, restaurants, bars, post offices, banks and tourists offices. Many popular eateries are found here and people casually come down to take a relaxing stroll. The famous Gaiety Theatre is located at The Mall. Apart from this the Ridge Point and the Scandal Point are two important meetings points at the Mall.

Jakhu Hill

the hill is situated at an altitude of 2455 meters. One needs to travel a distance of 2 km to reach the Jhaku Hill. This place offers a panoramic view of the entire Shimla town and is also the highest peak of Shimla. The “Hanuman temple” situated at the Jhaku Hill is very popular. There are some Hindu myths related to the Jhaku Hill that made the place more famous amongst the pilgrims.

Indian Institute of Advanced Sciences – it is a colonial establishment, the Viceregal Lodge is currently the address of the Indian Institute of Advanced Sciences. Build by the British between the years 1884 to 1888, the place has huge spacious gardens which are adorned by exotic flowers. The gardens remains ringed by tall pine trees which enhance the beauty of the place even more. The entire environment creates the exact calmness and serenity for the students to carry on with their research work.

Glen – this is one of the most popular and superb tourist destinations in Shimla. Situated at a distance of 4 km from the main town, Glen is one of the amazing picnic spots of Shimla. The beautiful flowing rivers and streams create quite a scene while flowing through the forests. Two very important hotels, the Cecil Hotel and the Kennedy House are located here in Glen.

The Ridge:

Situated in the heart of Shimla, The Ridge is an open space running alongside Shimla Mall. The Shimla Summer Festival takes place here and New Year witnesses a grand celebration. On its eastern end is a large reservoir that acts as the main water supply for the town.

Chail – this place is situated 45 km away from the central town Shimla. This place used to be the summer capital of the former Patiala State. The place is a lovely little town adorned with thick woods and narrow alleys and walks. The place is famous for having the highest cricket ground of the world. The Maharaja during his times introduced the special Scottish Red Deer in the adjoining dense forests. This place overall is quite famous for the exclusive collection of varieties of birds and animals.

Christ Church

this church is the second oldest church situated in the northern India and was built in the year 1857. This majestic church is situated on the Ridge area. The grandeur of the church has tainted glass windows which represent charity, humanity, faith, hope and patience.

Tara Devi – this is situated 8 km away from Shimla. This place has an amazing view and stands atop a hill. This is a famous temple of the Hindus and several pilgrims crowd here during their visit to pay their tribute to the goddess.

Lakkar Bazaar: Adjoining the Ridge, lakkar Bazaar is a marketplace which offers wooden articles targeted mainly towards tourists. The handcrafted wooden items are truly worth the money and sell like hot cakes. Tourists take them back as a souvenir of their trip. Lakkar Bazaar is also famous for its dry fruits and natural herbs. Apart from the usual shops the market also has a roller skating rink and the state hospital known as Indira Gandhi Medical College and hospital. Many hotels such as Hotel White and Diplomat Hotel are famous of lakkar Bazaar.

Summer Hill : A 5 km drive from The Ridge will take you the township called the Summer Hill, situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet. The University of Himachal Pradesh is situated here and Mahatma Gandhi is believed to have stayed here during his visits to the state. It is also among the popular honeymoon locales in the city.

Chadwick Falls: 67 m high Chadwick Falls are only really worth visiting during or just after the monsoons (July to October). The falls are 7 km from Shimla and can be reached via Summer Hill.

state Museum: Ancient Historical Sculptors and paintings of Himachal Pradesh. Visiting hours 10 AM to 5 PM. Closed on Monday and gazetted holidays.
