Severe cyclone Remal to may landfall on coast of West Bengal on Sunday May 26

Cyclone Remal is expected to develop over the east-central Bay of Bengal during the early hours of May 25, potentially intensifying into a severe cyclone. A low-pressure system situated over the Bay of Bengal is projected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm named Remal by Sunday evening, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is anticipated to transform into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday morning, according to IMD scientist Monica Sharma.

Subsequently, it will develop into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 25, and by the evening of May 26, it is predicted to make landfall in Bangladesh and the nearby West Bengal coast as a severe cyclonic storm.

Wind Advisory

The IMD has released a wind advisory for various regions. On May 24, squally winds with speeds ranging from 50-60 kmph, escalating to 70 kmph, are expected over the central Bay of Bengal.

Moving forward, from the morning of May 25, wind speeds will expand to the surrounding areas of the North Bay of Bengal, reaching 60-70 mph to 80 kmph, as per authorities.

By the morning of May 26, wind speeds are projected to further increase, peaking at 100-110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph, predominantly over the North Bay of Bengal.

Winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are also anticipated along and off the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and adjoining North Odisha from the evening of May 25.

The Andaman Islands will also encounter winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph.

Heavy Rainfall Advisory

The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall advisory for May 26 and 27. In the coastal districts of West Bengal and adjoining districts of north Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated at isolated spots.

Similarly, in Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur, light to moderate rainfall is forecasted.
