As an avid traveller, it’s no wonder that India is calling me with its enchanting mix of Eastern culture, delicious cuisine, colourful atmosphere and incredible landmarks. Of course.

It would be great to go travelling on a last minute deal to India but in the meantime I am continuing to put together an itinerary of everything that has to be experienced over there. Here are some ideas that have made it onto the list so far!

1. Exploring Hinduism

Hinduism is the dominant religion in India and it really is a way of life for people. Take along a book to learn all about the practices then visit temples and watch the festivals and join in the celebrations for a spiritual — and fun — experience. Diwali is a five-day Hindu festival of light that takes place between mid-October and November. All around India you can enjoy fireworks, lit up diyas, gift exchanging and lots of sweeties. Watch the Golden Temple in Amritsa light up in the night time sky, catch a blow up demon doll that makes its way down a street party in Goa or see fireworks sparkle and fade over the Mumbai skyline.

2. Street food

The street food in India has a reputation of being absolutely delicious. Jalebis are sugary sweet, deep fried treats and you can get larger versions called Imartis. Vada Pav spicy potato fritter in a bun that is sold everywhere in Mumbai. Paratha are pieces of unleavened bread that is pan fried in butter then stuffed with vegetables and cheese. It is then served with curries, pickles and chutneys. Kachori sabziis is another savoury and mixes small dough balls with spicy potato mash. Then, of course, there are the curries — obviously the best in the world, and most of them are vegetarian too.

3. The Taj Mahal

Surely no trip to India would be complete without a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage, the Taj Mahal. This iconic building was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his wife. Indian, Persian and Islamic influences were used to design the 240 ft Taj that sits on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India. The beautiful interiors, vast grounds and history are just calling to be explored. It’s also mandatory to get a selfie here!

These are just the starting points for a trip to India. Such a large country holds so many sites that need to be discovered and intriguing people to meet. Hopefully I’ll be able to go sooner rather than later.
